3/11 June: world championship in Sierra Nevada. After 8 years Nico Vouilloz gives up the scepter of world champion finishing in 8th place. The American wins Myles Rockwell before Steve Peat and Mickael Pascal, the latter always on the podium in the last 3 editions. In the 2000 season Sunn had financial problems (it declared bankruptcy at the end of the season) and therefore did not renew the contract of Vouilloz, who would race throughout 2000 with a personal bike (Process NV00) under the Vouilloz Racing Team, taking with him part of the entourage including Olivier Bossard who began producing suspensions for V-Process with his BOS brand, founded at the end of '99, immediately after Sunn's bankruptcy. Perhaps this led Nico to not be 100% concentrated even if he was the winner in the final World Cup ranking.
A few thousand spectators at Sierra Nevada on the difficult track overlooking Granada, defined by experts as one of the most fun tracks. The races were very close in terms of times with battles over hundredths of a second Cedric Gracia (FRA) he began to dream when he was on the podium for over an hour and a half with the best time before being ousted and finishing in 7th place.
Myles Rockwell he is the author of an exceptional performance and bats for just a few cents Steve Peat (58 cents) e Mickael Pascal (68 hundredths), still on the podium in a world test: “Hor clerk of the little ones errors,” Rockwell reports,but I was really pushing hard. My father told me years ago that if I wanted I could win a world championship, this year I believed it with all my might, I stayed focused and I won. Seeing my name next to the wording 'World Champion' has an effect on me, it seems like a dream. I dedicate the victory to Giant, to the family and to all those who support me".
"I knew I was in for a medal but a defeat by a few cents hurts me“, says Peat, “Now I think back to all the little mistakes I made and I'm beating myself up but I can try again next year". Mickael Pascal, after the 1997 world championship as a Junior, he came close to winning the world championship for the third edition in a row by climbing onto the podium.
After the surprise victory of Rockwell comes the solid confirmation of Anne-Caroline Chausson (FRA), who wins her fifth consecutive Elite title (8th in total) beating the Finn by 1"13 cents Katja Repo, which repeats second place after last year's world championship. Chausson only placed 5th in qualifying with Marla Streb (USA) the fastest. Seeing Vouilloz, among the men, without the rainbow jersey will have had a strange effect on Chausson, given that in the last 8 years she has always shared the podium with him. Chausson didn't just win in DH but also won the world title in Dual Slalom!
But Chausson doesn't pay much attention to the statistics and sets the best time ahead of the Finnish Katja Repo and the American Marla Streb:”I completed a good run and the victory came“, he reports Chausson"as usual it was tough. I had technical problems in qualifying and on Wednesday I wasn't reconnaissance on the route to repair the bike together with my mechanics. If the race had been on Friday I wouldn't have been world champion."
“It went better than I expected,” says the Repo"because the track was very fast and I had some problems. I'm very happy and I would like to be that fast for a long time." The Americana Streb declares:”I feel very competitive both physically and psychologically. I tried, I pedaled hard and the result I was hoping for arrived. The crowd was very quiet and I thought I was going slowly given that I had a poor heat in qualifying."
