Nino Schurter Cairns 2017
9 September 2017 – Nino Schurter completes an incredible season with the victory of the 2017 XC world championship. The race promises to be very difficult due to the high humidity and heat. The race immediately gets to the heart of the Schurter / Kulhavy challenge, but the Swiss Litscher and the Brazilian Avancini manage to keep the leading duo.
After a fiery pace from Kulhavy, a well-placed attack on the last lap was enough and Schurter went on to win his 6th XC world title. Behind him Kulhavy and then Litscher. First of the Italians is Gerhard Kerschbaumer, 13th, then Luca Braidot in 17th, Marco Aurelio Fontana in 21st, Daniele Braidot in 27th and Andrea Tiberi in 30th.
«We paid for not being able to interpret such fast starts in the best possible way and, in some cases, fate didn't help us. I'm equally happy, because the boys always fought at all times to get out of difficult situations. Everyone finished the race and I consider this a sign of responsibility and respect towards the shirt they wore. I am also satisfied with the group that has been created, with young people and more experienced riders who get along well, there is mutual respect and a desire to improve. No regrets, just a bit of bitterness because we were sure of bringing home some podiums, also given the indications coming from the season. We'll meet again in Switzerland in a year!" I am referring to Mirko Celestino.
Today's three matches (Women U23, Women and Men Elite) brought out Switzerland with Sina Frei, Jolanda Neff and the timeless Nino Schurter, new world champions. Jolanda Neff dominates the Elite Women's World Championship, leaving everyone on her pedals making it her "usual" race in solitude. This is the fourth world title for the Swiss, the first as an elite. Behind her was the British Annie Last, able to resist the Neff for only one lap. French Pauline Prevot Ferrand was third. Eva Lechner and Serena Calvetti finished in 17th and 34th place respectively.
