3th July 2016 – Nino Schurter he is the world champion for the fifth time cross country. After an initial lap with Kulhavy, Schurter changed gear, increasingly increasing the gap between him and his pursuers, who defined themselves during the race as Julien Absalon and Jaroslav Kulhavy.
The technical nature of the route showcased Schurter's skills and he literally exalted himself on this route. The Swiss's dominance was impressive and his lead over the Czech and Frenchman, who alternated in second and third place, was a good 30 seconds at the start of the last lap.
Julien Absalon with the dropper post (2016)
Kulhavy managed, during the last lap, to give Julien Absalon a few meters between him to take a well-deserved 2nd place. Third place therefore for Absalon, who today, despite perhaps not being at the top of his form, still ran a great race, also considering the 2 minute gap from Cink, who finished in fourth position. As for the Italians, in the top 20 there is only Marco Aurelio Fontana, who finished 18th, 4'45" behind Schurter.
The new women's world champion is Annika Langvad, capable of containing Neff's action in the first round and then slowly and inexorably increasing her advantage over her direct opponents. Among these she has practically never been the other favorite in the world championship. In fact, after an initial lap at a reckless pace, the Neff overrevved and lost positions in the space of a few kilometres, settling around tenth position (8th at the end).
Disappointment for the darling of the house Katerina Nash and Gunn Rita Dahle. Subsequently, in one of the challenging jumps of the circuit, the Ukrainian Belomoina, already third at last year's world championships, also fell, as did the outgoing world champion Pauline Ferrand Prevot, who finished far from the leaders and with a bleeding face.
