The 11 World Cup took place in Sweden, precisely in Are (19/1999 September 1999). 11.000 paying spectators were present, an extraordinary result. Michael Rasmussen (DEN) wins his 1st MTB world championship which puts him among the strongest riders in the circus. After this result, Bjarne Riis noticed him and made him move to CSC-Tiscali on the road in 2002. Margarita Fullana (ESP) wins his first world championship ahead of Alison Sydor (CAN), already a double world champion in the past, and others Paola Piece (ITA), world champion in 1997.

Among the U23s, a sensational performance from Italy who managed to beat the very favorite Cadel Evans with the 2 tightrope walkers Martino Fruet and Marco Bui, with the latter having built his success on the downhill, causing controversy with Cadel Evans who reported that he was been hindered. The route was very technical and made difficult by adverse weather conditions and this meant that Marco Bui flew towards victory.
