August 21, 2016 - Nino Schurter he wins his first Olympics by dominating it ahead of the blind Jaroslav Kulhavy. Immediately after the start it was understood that he was the man to beat, with our Marco Aurelio Fontana immediately in first position dictating the pace. Behind him was Schurter and a great Peter Sagan, who started last but was already in third place after a few metres. The pace is very high and the shuffles are continuous. Julien Absalon perhaps pays for the route being too modern, given his predilection for longer climbs and less nervous routes.
After the 1st lap there are already the first twists: both Fontana and Sagan puncture and are forced to stop, losing very important positions. Luca Braidot begins his formidable race and is in the lead together with Nino Schurter. All the other favorites are just behind. During the second round it begins to understand that the 2 athletes who will play for gold are the same as in London: Nino Schurter and Jaroslav Kulhavy. A group forms shortly behind with Braidot, Marotte and Coloma. Absalon is further behind, it is about 40" away and now seems cut off. Kulhavy continues to push uphill, but Schurter holds on without difficulty.
Halfway through the race we find several tandems: Schurter-Kulhavy in front, Coloma-Marotte behind at 23" and Fluckiger-Botero Villegas at 50". Further back Braidot together with Absalon at 1'36" and this situation remains almost stable until the last lap where Nino Schurter attacks and in the technical sections gains ground. He will go on to win gold deservedly demonstrates impressive strength and technique. Second place for Kulhavy. For the bronze, a great fight between Coloma and Marotte with the Spaniard overtaking the French by a few seconds.
Great performance by Luca Braidot who finished 7th ahead of Julien Absalon. It's a shame for Peter Sagan who, after the puncture, no longer found the rhythm and concentration and was forced to retire. The same thing can be said for Marco Aurelio Fontana who finished in 20th position at 6'57", while Andrea Tiberi managed to overtake him by one position, finishing 19th at 6'05" (also slowed down by a puncture).
Among the women, the Swede Jenny Rissveds wins in a hard-fought race. The race saw constant shuffling with Switzerland's Linda Indergrand leading the race for 2 and a half laps when the favorites Jolanda Neff, Rissveds and Wloszczowska took the lead.
Halfway through the race, Jolanda Neff takes the lead but Rissveds and Wloszczowska don't give up. Meanwhile Annika Langvad doesn't find the right rhythm while behind the leading trio we find, about 15" behind, Batty, Dahle, Indergrand and Nash. Further back are Pendrel and Langvad.
JennyRissveds proves to have an edge on the descent, even compared to the very strong Jolanda Neff. She gains a few seconds but Neff doesn't give up. During the 4th lap Jenny Rissveds continues to push and Neff breaks away, with Wloszczowska barely holding on. Jolanda Neff at the start of the 5th lap is 29" behind the first two, while behind the group of Pendrel, Batty and Nash she is 57 seconds away. Linda Indergrand is 1'31" and Annika Langvad, after a puncture, is even further back 1'54".
In the last 2 laps it is a 2-way fight between Rissveds and Wloszczowska but during the last lap the Swede manages to gain in the more technical sections and to win with a narrow advantage over the Pole. Bronze medal for Catharine Pendrel. The only Italian in the race, Eva Lechner, concludes in 18th position at 8'30 ”without ever, unfortunately, having entered the heart of the race.
