The 1998 Mountain Bike World Cup organized by the International Cycling Union (UCI) and supported by Grundig is being held for the first time in three disciplines: cross country, downhill and dual slalom, with eight stages for each discipline. Cadel Evans, just 21 years old, won in the men's field, while Alison Sydor won in the women's field. Cadel Evans will sign a contract as a trainee with Saeco the following year and thus prepare his transition to road cycling.
Of note is the victory of Hubert Pallhuber, wearing the rainbow jersey for the whole of 2018, in the Conyers stage and the 3rd place (in the general) of Paola Pezzo.
