28 August - Julian Absalon enters the history of MTB by winning his first Olympics and starting the King Julien era. In 2nd place the Spanish Jose Hermida beats “sir” Brentjen. Marco Bui achieved a good 10th place, even though many expected a great performance from the talent from Mestre.
Among women, supremacy of Gunn Rita Dahle who won the Olympic title ahead of Premont (one minute behind) and Spitz. At the end of the race the euphoric Dahle made this declaration: "I am the strongest biker in the world". Paola Pezzo, after the victories in Atlanta and Sydney, was forced to retire due to painful back pain. Note the good performance of the stainless Alison Sydor; the thirty-six-year-old Canadian has proven that she is still the longest-serving biker around.
