Shanaze Danielle Reade (born 23 September 1988, Crewe) English bmx-rider and pistard, three-time world champion, BMX specialty. She was also a two-time track cycling world champion. Shanaze is the daughter of a Jamaican father and an Irish mother. She participated in the Beijing 2008 BMX Olympic Games; She started as the favorite and finished eighth, due to a disastrous fall. She also participated in the London 2012 Olympic Games in BMX, where she obtained a sixth place.
In April 2017 Reade announced her retirement from competition, after being dropped from British Cycling's elite squad: in a 2021 interview she said this had forced her to withdraw as British Cycling's medical team believed that she would not be able to compete in the Tokyo Olympics because she had had shoulder surgery five times.
After her retirement she became a fitness instructor. However, the period following her retirement was characterized by a bout of alcoholism and weight gain, from which she recovered after joining Alcoholics Anonymous. In August 2018 she returned to training at British Cycling, having been invited several times by performance director Stephen Park. In a January 2019 interview, Reade explained that he was returning to competition for "closure" after feeling that his physical and mental condition was not optimal at the time of his retirement, adding that he now treated the sport as a hobby and did not accepting funding for his cycling. That month she won the British National Team Sprint Championships alongside Blaine Ridge-Davis, her first national title in any discipline. However, a few days later it was excluded from selection for the 2019 UCI Track Cycling World Championships due to a changed rule requiring world championships competitors to have competed in that season's World Cup: the team's sprint team GB sent to the world championships were unable to secure qualification for the Olympics in the event. Reade subsequently retired from competition for a second time. She said she was subsequently approached by the British Bobsleigh and Skeleton Association to ask if she would consider competing in bobsleigh with a view to being part of the British team at the 2022 Winter Olympics, but that she turned them down.
